We had the opportunity of a lifetime to celebrate the Panoz family and all of their contributions to the automotive world. In the history of motorsports it is seldom you find a family like Panoz that did so much for our community especially in the United States.

Entirely through fate we met Dan Panoz at Laguna Seca during Monterey Car Week in August 2022  while working for our client, Motul. Motul is the title sponsor of what is now called The Motul Petit Le Mans. Immediately upon recognizing Dan, the entire Motul team was overwhelmed with excitement.

It is not every day you get to meet someone like Dan Panoz. We hold Dan Panoz in high regard. It is comparable to meeting a Carol Shelby or Enzo Ferrari historically, in our honest opinion. In our culture, motorsports is oddly one of those industries/sports where you can still stumble upon the people who made it so great just in passing. They are people at an event who can be unrecognizable in a crowd. People who often do not get the credit we believe they deserve.

Dan was instantaneously gracious, welcoming, and kind to our absolute gushing over him. Dan told us that he has a museum a few miles from the track that honors the history of his family and their automobiles. Immediately then and there, we said we had to do something for the upcoming 25th Anniversary of Petit Le Mans. And so, we did.

We celebrated the last quarter century of the unbelievable accomplishments of the Panoz family in style at the Panoz Museum on September 30th, 2022. It is was a cocktail party filled with enthusiasts and industry professionals. It is somewhat difficult to describe this event in words as it was such a passionate and emotionally charged celebration. The immense gratitude and reception we received from Dan Panoz and his family was more than we could have ever expected and the feelings from us were greater than mutual. We are appreciative to work for a company like Motul who saw the importance in recognizing Panoz who paved the way for us all to work together in a great event known at Motul Petit Le Mans. We hope to make this an annual event and to bring more awareness to younger generations who can be inspired by the ultimate American Dream story like Panoz.

Brief History of Panoz

The story of the Panoz family starts with the late Don Panoz. Don Panoz's enthusiam and charisma greatly contributed to the renaissance of endurance racing as we know it today. Don was a serial entrepreneur who made his fortune in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1997 Don founded Panoz Motor Sport Group and created the commissioned and campaigned the Panoz Esperante GTR-1, the first successful front- engine prototype race car in more than 30 years of racing. From 1997 to 2002 Panoz Le Mans prototype race cars won eight endurance sports car championship races.

The previous year Don had purchased Road Atlanta. After experiencing the infamous 24 Hours of Le Mans, Don decided to root something new in American soil and started Petit Le Mans in 1998. Contested over 1,000 miles (1,600 km) or 10 hours of racing, Petit Le Mans serves as the closing round of the U.S.'s main endurance series: first named the American Le Mans Series (from 1999 to 2013), then the Tudor United SportsCar Championship (2014 and 2015) and now called the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (since 2016).
